StrikeMatz

Excavation Reinvented

Welcome to StrikeMatz

Revolutionising Safe Excavation

StrikeMatz is the safer, smarter way to expose underground utilities — without hand digging. Our reusable, impact-resistant system allows for safe mechanical excavation directly above live services, keeping teams protected and projects moving.

Fully detectable and tested to withstand extreme force, StrikeMatz is compliant with HSG47 and built for real-world conditions. It’s used across the UK by contractors, developers, and utility providers who need speed, safety, and certainty in every dig.

StrikeMatz isn’t just a product — it’s the future of excavation. Simple. Compliant. Strike-free.

About StrikeMatz

Our Story

StrikeMatz was developed in response to over 200 service strike investigations conducted between 2017 and 2024. These revealed a clear industry gap: the lack of safe mechanical excavation near live services.

In response, we created StrikeMatz—an innovative solution that replaces manual digging with a higher standard of safety and efficiency.

Today, StrikeMatz is redefining utility protection, enabling smarter, safer excavation across the UK and beyond.

About Us

StrikeMatz is a reusable, impact-resistant safety system designed to prevent service strikes during excavation. Installed above buried utilities—such as gas, water, electric, and telecom—it enables safe mechanical digging, eliminating the need for manual excavation.

Developed with industry experts and compliant with HSG47, StrikeMatz acts as a detectable barrier that fits seamlessly into existing workflows. Its modular, adaptable design suits straight runs, plot connections, and raised setups around service fittings—making it the smart choice for safer, more efficient excavation.

Our Mission

To Eliminate Service Strikes—Safely, Effectively, and Sustainably.

With over 60,000 service strikes occurring every year across the UK, our mission is simple: Drive that number down—to zero.

Through continuous innovation, expert collaboration, and industry-leading education, StrikeMatz is reshaping how excavation near utilities is carried out making worksites safer and smarter for good.

What are StrikeMatz?

StrikeMatz is a Utility Protection System designed to eliminate the need for manual excavation around underground services like water, gas, electric, and telecom. It enables safe mechanical digging directly over live utilities—without compromising safety or compliance.

Made from durable, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), StrikeMatz is impact-resistant, lightweight, reusable, and recyclable. Each board is detectable by magnetometer and configurable for straight runs, plot connections, or raised installations around fittings. It’s fully HSG47-compliant, certified for mechanical excavation, and qualifies as a fixed asset, offering both safety and financial benefits.

Developed alongside industry experts and tested to withstand over 60kN of force, StrikeMatz is the only system on the market proven to prevent service strikes entirely when used correctly—delivering a smarter, safer approach to excavation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the product detectable?

Yes, StrikeMatz is detectable. Once the product has been installed, it is detectable by a magnetometer. The additive (single and double feet) will aid the operative, as the sound frequency will increase whilst using the device once it detects the outside feet of the StrikeMatz system.

  • What can the product withstand?

StrikeMatz has withstood more than 60KN of force. This has been completed during laboratory testing with a 16T excavator exerting maximum force on concrete surfaces to test the breaking force of the system

  • What is the product made from?

Boards are constructed from a specialist High Density Polyethylene to allow for maximum impact resistance. Both the double and single feet are also made of HDPE for additional installation support/ rigidity.

  • What is the excavation process like?

A permit to work system must be operational for all works in proximity to services.

A review of service information is required to determine the location of the previously Laid Services. This is the first step in the process.

Following this, the photographic evidence generated when StrikeMatz were previously installed (Immediately following installation) should offer further certainty of where StrikeMatz are positioned.

The next step ahead of the permit to work application is to scan the area using a magnetometer to locate the StrikeMatz installation.

Using the results of the magnetometer scan, As Laid Services Drawings, and photographic details from installation, apply for a permit to work with a suitable safe system of work.

  • What are the board measurements?

The system is lightweight to facilitate handling safety. Boards are 900mm x 300mm x 90mm, making them easy to handle, store and transport/ relocate.

  • What is the price of StrikeMatz?

The price of StrikeMatz is subject to volume although far less expensive than hand dig, far cheaper than Vac-Ex and safer than both!
